Manufacturing Process, Measurements, Steel Rule, and Vernier Calipers (Week 2) Flashcards
What is manufacturing?
-The process of converting raw materials, components, or parts into finished goods that meet a customer’s expectations or specifications.
-A sequence of operations and processes designed to create a specific product
-The process of turning materials into a product
What are the 6 types of Manufacturing?
- Forming
- Casting
- Molding
- Joining
- Machining
- Additive
What is Metrology?
Metrology is “the science of measurement, embracing both experimental and theoretical determinations at any level of uncertainty in any field of science and technology,”
What is Accuracy?
Measures how close results are to the true or known value.
What is Precision?
Measures how close results are to one another / to discover the variation between different parts produced by the same process.
What is Resolution?
The smallest distinguishable change the sensor/instrument can detect and display.
What is Repeatability?
How much will measurements vary even when performed by the same person using the same equipment.
What is a Steel Rule?
- A device used in geometry and technical drawing, as well as the engineering and construction industries, to measure distances or draw straight lines.
- Graduated in inch and / or millimeters.
- Commonly used measuring tool for getting rough measurements on a part.
How to care for a Steel Rule?
- Handle carefully.
- The zero end of the rule must be kept in perfect condition to maintain accuracy.
- The primary purpose is accurate measurement, they can also be used as guides for laying out line. Also, check the flatness of a par.
What is a Standard Vernier/Caliper?
Instrument for making very accurate linear or angular measurements.
