What is manual therapy?
Manual therapy is skilled hand movements or skilled passive movements of joints and tissue carried out by a physiotherapist.
Why would you use manual therapy on a patient?
- Increase ROM
- Reduce muscle or joint stiffness
- Reduce pain
- Increase muscle length

What would you use Maitland’s joint mobilisation grading scale for?
You would use Maitland’s joint mobilisation grading scale to work out how much force you need to apply during an accessory movement.
When would you use Maitland’s grade 1 and 2 joint mobilisations?
You would use Maitland’s grade 1 and 2 joint mobilisations if the patients main problem was pain.
When would you use Maitland’s grade 3 and 4 joint mobilisations?
To reduce stiffness in a joint.
