manual skills MM squeezing, pickup Flashcards

1
Q

muscle squeezing

A

DEFINITION:
The muscle is compressed between the palm and fingers or between both palms. The pressure is then directed slightly vertically.

USE:
excellent techniques to utilize to complete a stroke (effleurage/stroking)
Used to decrease adhesions between tissues
Used after the tissue is warmed up because of the pressure

Q

effects

A

EFFECTS:
By lifting the tissues – reduction in adhesions can occur. This will improve themovement between the lifted tissue and it’s underlying structures-
Increase interstitial fluid exchange between cells which increases and improves the general nutrient supply and waste removal from area of application

Q

indications

A

INDICATIONS:
General assessment with palpation of a particular region. The therapist will feel for the reaction of the underlying tissues
Increase general relaxation - relaxes hyper-toned muscles (muscle tension)–via an action on the muscle spindle -
a good technique to use as a post event techniques following sporting events
Adhesions between layers of tissues are present
Wanting to increase range of motion – as muscle tissue become relaxed, movement at the joint often increases.

Q

precautions

A

PRECAUTIONS:
All local and general CI’s as per CMT guidelines

TECHNIQUE:
May be used with or without oil-full hand contact with relaxedfingers to the area of application with hands molded to fit contours.
Pressure is applied by leaning with your body weight to push the tissue slowly against the underlying structures- slow progressive pressure is applied pressure should be on the muscle bellies wherever possible-
Bio-mechanically the therapist has a good / grounded stance. Hands moulding to area treated. Using moderate to firm squeezing pressure, gather tissue and lift. Movement of procedure should come from the waist, legs and arms.

Q

picking up

A

DEFINITION:

A manual technique applied with either one or both hands that involve gently squeezing and lifting the underlying tissues using moderate to firm pressure.

Usually performed on the limbs of the body with the larger muscles groups, and can be performed with or without oil.

Q

uses effects

A

USE:
when modified (one handed picking up) becomes an excellent modality to utilize to massage the upper extremities
Is used to massage the medial and lateral aspects of the lower and upper extremities

EFFECTS:
By compressing the underlying structures the fluids are ‘squeezed’ out of the tissues. This action promotes and improves local and cutaneous circulation
Compression empties venous beds, lowering venous pressure and increases capillary and lymphatic flow
By lifting the tissues – reduction in adhesions can occur. This will improve the movement between the lifted tissue and it’s underlying structures
Increases interstitial fluid exchange between cells which increases and improves the general nutrient supply and waste removal from area of application

To improve circulation (vascular and lymphatic)
Edema
post event technique in sports massage
poor or sluggish circulation to an area

Q

precautions

A

PRECAUTIONS:
All local and general CI’s as per CMT guideline

TECHNIQUE:
Is performed with full palmar contact with the hands molding to fit the contours of the area worked on – both sides of the tissue are squeezed together then lifted from the underlying structures
Hand contact remains throughout the whole procedure
Pressure is used to squeeze and lift, the therapist then relaxes their hands – using no pressure- as the tissues returns to its position
Usually done with fleshier structures – for example –with biceps, triceps, gastrocnemius, upper trapezius, abdominals
performed with the area undraped
can be performed with or without oil
Follow principles of massage – working towards venous flow
Bio-mechanically the therapist has a good / grounded stance. Hands molding to area treated. Using moderate to firm squeezing pressure, gather tissue and lift. Movement of procedure should come from the waist, legs and arms.
