Manual Machines Flashcards
Name the operations performed on a Vertical Milling Machine
Pocketing, slotting, drilling, chamfering, boring, tapping, reaming
Name at least 3 of the Machines used during the semester
Horizontal and vertical bandsaws, vertical milling machine, radial arm drill, CNC lathe, CNC vertical milling machine
What components are on a vertical milling machine?
Carbide tipped face mill, or a flat end mill drill, 4 or 2 fluted, centered or not centered.
Can you pocket with a fluted drill?
No
What is boring used for?
For accurately sizing a hole
How do you measure the size of a drill bit?
Take a vernier caliper and measure across the flats You also count the number of flutes and and if it’s centered or not.
What two bandsaws are there in the shop?
Vertical and horizontal.
What is the vertical bandsaw used for?
Contour cuts
What is the horizontal bandsaw used for?
To cut material
Is a radial arm drill a drill press?
No, because you put the material on the plate and move the drill over top of it. Arm moves on a radius.
What does a lathe do?
Boring, drill, tap, mill, turn, face, cut grooves, the most universal machine because you can make another lathe using a lathe.
How is tapering done?
Using either the compound method or the offset method.
Can you use a fluted flat end for leadin/lead out?
Yes, you can, but cannot contour.
What is a draw bar and how does it work?
A draw bar is found the vertical milling machine. You change the tool by loosening and tightening the nut at the top, and draws tool into the taper, R8 taper.
Why should you put a shoulder in your material in the lather?
Because it puts less stress on the material and a lesser chance of it breaking.
Should we let mitchell use the sand blaster?
Not in any circumstance, he broke it the last time he did
How would you describe drill bits?
By diameter, numerically, fractional sizes.
What is the procedure in running the vertical milling machine?
1) center the X and Y axis
2) turn the spindle on forwards, clockwise direction
3) set the speed, only do so when the spindle is on
4) bring the table up until it just touches, then set your 0, with the backlash up
5) bring the table up to depth to cut
6) use the hand wheels to feed throughout at a steady even pace
What is the procedure for end facing on the lathe?
1) set the speed, then turn the machine on
2) move it so that it just touches, so that it runs true using the cross slide axis hand wheel
3) then move it out to the outside at a steady, even pace
4) if necessary, check the edge for burs then using a file, left handedly bevel the edge
What tool is on the lathe?
Facing and turning tool made of high speed steel, (HSS)
What is the procedure for turning a diameter on the lathe?
1) set speed then turn the machine on
2) using the cross slide axis hand wheel to just touch to make sure that it’s running true
3) then move it to the outside at a steady, even pace
4) set the depth, then go in
When turning a diameter on the lathe, if you set the depth for .05, will it take off only .05?
No, it will actually be .10, because the turning tool will take the .05 off both sides
What is the design process?
1) Idea
2) Research
3) Design
4) Production
5) Test and evaluation
What are the three types of tap drills?
NC (national course) NF (national fine) NPT (national (I forget, it’s in the textbook))
