Manual Machines Flashcards
Name the operations performed on a Vertical Milling Machine
Pocketing, slotting, drilling, chamfering, boring, tapping, reaming
Name at least 3 of the Machines used during the semester
Horizontal and vertical bandsaws, vertical milling machine, radial arm drill, CNC lathe, CNC vertical milling machine
What components are on a vertical milling machine?
Carbide tipped face mill, or a flat end mill drill, 4 or 2 fluted, centered or not centered.
Can you pocket with a fluted drill?
No
What is boring used for?
For accurately sizing a hole
How do you measure the size of a drill bit?
Take a vernier caliper and measure across the flats You also count the number of flutes and and if it’s centered or not.
What two bandsaws are there in the shop?
Vertical and horizontal.
What is the vertical bandsaw used for?
Contour cuts
What is the horizontal bandsaw used for?
To cut material
Is a radial arm drill a drill press?
No, because you put the material on the plate and move the drill over top of it. Arm moves on a radius.
What does a lathe do?
Boring, drill, tap, mill, turn, face, cut grooves, the most universal machine because you can make another lathe using a lathe.
How is tapering done?
Using either the compound method or the offset method.
Can you use a fluted flat end for leadin/lead out?
Yes, you can, but cannot contour.
What is a draw bar and how does it work?
A draw bar is found the vertical milling machine. You change the tool by loosening and tightening the nut at the top, and draws tool into the taper, R8 taper.
Why should you put a shoulder in your material in the lather?
Because it puts less stress on the material and a lesser chance of it breaking.
