Stages of readiness - stage 0
Magazine empty and detached from firearm
Stage 1
Magazine and chamber empty , bolt closed, firing pin released
Stage 2
Magazine loaded , bolt closed , chamber empty , firing pin released
Stage 3
Firearm loaded, firing pin cocked , safety on
Stage 4
Firearm loaded and cocked , safety off , ready to fire
Reason not to shoot at traffic sign
1- not accredited shooting target.
2- ammunition is powerful , penetrate sign and keep flying.
3- a house or rural dwelling might be behind the sign.
Safety firearm handling (5)
1 - Don’t receive / hand over a firearm before doing a safety inspections.
2- always point in safe direction.
3- know your target or threat.
4 -know what’s behind your target or threat.
5- always carry in a ready position when hunting.
Crossing and obstacle ( safety )

1- always unload firearm before crossing obstacle.
2- always place the muzzle away from you
3- if there are two people let one cross with no firearms and then transfer the firearms to the person who has crossed before crossing
4- always cross a fence at the fence post to reduce damage to fence
Making a rifle safe (6)
1- point in a safety direction
2- make sure safety catch is applied
3-remove magazine
4- remove safety catch and cycle rifle until all cartridges are ejected
5- keep bolt open while inspecting the chamber for cartridges
6- release the bolt forward with a finger on the trigger to depress firing pin.
Loading and unloading magazine

1- hold the rifle at the pistol grip and tilt it to the right
2- insert the front of the magazine into the rifle and pull the magazine back until you hear the catch snap into place.
3- safety in ( s) position
Firing and unloading
1- aim while holding the rifle comfortably on the target and squeeze the trigger
2- remove the magazine and open the action, ensure chamber is empty and release the bolt forward with the firing pin depressed.
3- apply safety
Immediate action drill
( if casing ejects )
Push the magazine upward to make sure it’s properly seated, open the bolt all the way and watch for the ejection of the casing. Cycle a new round and squeeze the trigger to shoot the firearm

( casing is not ejected )

1 -apply safety
2- remove magazine
3- pull cocking lever all the way back
4- tilt firearm to the side ( ejection port upward )
5 - look and feel for ammunition in the chamber
6- remove ammunition , ensure barrel isn’t damaged
7- insert magazine , cock weapon and fire
Sights ( open sight )
1- bead/post front sight , with a notched rear sight.
2- simple inexpensive, allows quick sighting
3 center the the top on the bead with notched rear sight, align on the target.
4- can be fixed or adjustable
Sights ( aperture sight )
1- bead/post front sight
2- round whole set on receiver.
3- align the front sight on the target whilst the in round whole of the rear sight
4- more accurate and easier to adjust
Loading a rifle to stage 2

1- gather ammunition and magazine
2- ensure that the ammunition is correct and suited to the firearm
3- load the magazine
4- pick up the firearm pointing in a safe direction.
5 - disengage safety catch
6- open the bolt comply backwards and cycle a round by pushing it forward and down into the grove
7- insert the magazine into the rifle
8- engage the safety catch
Loading a rifle with internal magazine stage 2 ( 6)
1- gather ammunition
2- ensure ammunition is correct and suited for the firearm.
3- pick up firearm in safe direction
4 - load internal magazine with correct ammunition
5- whilst holding down the ammunition with 4 fingers start to push the bolt slowly forward and ensure that do not insert the top round into the chamber
6- remove your fingers once the bolt has crossed half of the cartridge
Charge by dangerous game
( stage 2 rifle )
1- disengage your safety while giving your client instructions
2- pull your bolt backwards and cycle a round
3- start lining up a possible defence shot ( know when to shoot )
5- know danger zones and where your clients are
Carrying a firearm
( no person may carry a fire arm )
1- in a holster or holder designed manufactured for carrying a hand gun that’s isn’t attached to his or her body
2- in a rucksack or similar holder or in a case of another firearm in a holder designed to for the carrying of that firearm
3- a firearm in subsection (1) must be fully covered and the person carrying the firearm must be able to exercise effective use over such firearm
Section 120 offences
( a person is guilty of safekeeping if )
1- fails to lock away his firearm in their possession in a prescribed safe/strongroom when such firearm is not on his or her person
2- losses of a firearm or dispossession owing that persons failure to lock away firearm in prescribe safe
3- failure to take reasonable steps to prevent the theft of loss of such firearm on his/her person or direct control
4 - keep the keys to such safe/strongroom is safe custody
Criteria for storing a firearm
1- when a firearm is not under direct personal and physical control of the owner. The firearm and ammunition must be stored in a safe or strongroom that conforms to SABS prescripts
2- and existing safe/strongroom that complies with the regulations under the previous act will be deemed to comply with the standards set out in SABS standards
Requirements of a lock away safe
1- be manufactured from steel 2mm thick (atleast )
2- be capable of enclosing and covering firearm wholly
3- have an effective integral locking mechanism
4- have a hinge mechanism for the cover/lid , ensuring that if the locking pin were removed the cover/lid would not be capable of being removed
5 - have a facility that the safe/strongroom can be affixed to a structure ( wall, floor , vehicle )
6- a lock away safe contemplated in sub-regulation (5) can only be locked or opened with 2 or more keys used jointly.
When may you act in self defence
1 - the attack on you must be illegal
2- the attack on you or 3rd party must be imminent or already in progress
3- you must believe the attack will result in death or serious bodily harm
4- there must be no reasonable way of avoiding the attack
5 - your response to the attack must be immediate
6- you may not use more force than that is necessary.
