What is manual handling
- Manual handling includes both transporting loads and supporting a load in a static posture
What do manual handling activities include
- Lifting or lowering
- twisting or turning
- pushing
- pulling
- reaching
- carrying or supporting
Manual handling operations regulations (mhor) requires employers to?
Avoid - hazardous manual handling as for as reasonably practicable
Assess - any manual handling activity if it can’t be avoided
Reduce - the risk of the activity as a result of the assessment
Review - the risk assessment and monitor safe systems
How do employees comply with the MHOR
- By ensuring appropriate risk assessments of moving and handling, or postural tasks are carried out in each department ensuring safe systems of work are provided to reduce the risk of injury from these tasks to the lowest level possible
Where are risk assessments held?
Must be readily accessible to all staff in the department or service area

Ergonomic risk assesment
Aims to fit the role to the person designing or arranging workplace, product, or systems to fit the people using them
E.g equipment, work environment, tasks and job
Includes risk assement, identification and implementations to reduce risk
Ergonomic assessments
In making an ergonomic assessment the first step is to identify wether manual handling task can be avoided if not the task may need to be assessed
Moving and handling concentrates on 4 main factors which are?
Load
- size, shape, surface type, and weight of load being moved
Individual Capacity
- The capability of the person carrying out the manual handling activities
Task
- The type of manual handling activity such as pushing, pulling and lifting
Environment
- The area which the activity is happening

- Work Organisation

*Shift patterns
* Working relationships
* Level of communication required
* Routine practices
* Number of staff available

*skill mix in the department - Equipment provision and upkeep
