Manual 4: Silver diamine fluoride Flashcards
1
Q
What is silver diamine fluoride?
A
- topical medicament
- colourless odourless liquid composed of silver, ammonium and fluoride ions at a PH of 10.4
2
Q
What is the purpose of Silver and fluoride in SDF?
A
- Silver has antimicrobial properties
- fluoride for remineralisation of enamel and dentine
3
Q
What are the two uses of SDF?
A
- Managing and preventing progression of carious lesions
2. Relieving dentine hypersensitivity
4
Q
What is one concern to be aware of in the clinical environment regarding the use of SDF?
A
- it will stain most oxidisable surfaces black/dark
- permanent for surfaces/clothes
- lasts 2/3 weeks on gums etc
5
Q
what are key points to ensure prior to delivering SDF?
A
- ensure treatment plan agreed
- ensure pt and parent aware of black staining
- ensure nurse aware of staining
- ensure pt and parent signed consent form and read SDF info leaflet
- ensure patient has safety glasses and apron
6
Q
outline the procedure of delivering SDF
A
- apply petroleum jelly to gums and lips to protect from staining
- clean and dry teeth
- dry tooth with air
- put small amount of SDF in dish or if capsule then break it with micro brush
- use micro brush to place SDF on carious lesion
- leave it on for 1 minute
- air dry excess SDF / use cotton pellet
7
Q
What could you use alongside SDF to reduce staining?
A
- potassium iodide capsule (KI)
8
Q
how does KI capsule reduce black staining?
A
- potassium iodide reacts with free silver ions to minimise black staining
- not enough evidence re effectiveness
