What are the four principles upon which PIPP is based?
- Manitoba residents injured in automobile accidents in Canada or the US are covered.
- Compensation is guaranteed for all injured persons, regardless of fault.
- Coverage is provided for specific economic losses from automobile injury or death. There are few limits or restrictions.
- Basic benefit amounts are adjusted each year to reflect changes in Consumer Price Index or the Manitoba Average Industrial Wage.
Who is covered under PIPP ?
- All Manitoba residents.
- Visitors injured in an automobile accident in Manitoba.
Does Income Replacement Indemnity coverage under PIPP begin on the first day of the claim?
No it does not, it begins after a 7-day waiting period.
What are some of the costs paid under the Medical Expenses coverage?
- Physiotherapy and chiropractic treatments;
- Medication; and
- Prosthetics.
What might be covered under Rehabilitation Expenses?
Approved physical and occupational therapy, and employment retraining for people who cannot return to their previous employment.
Who could receive payment under the Death Benefits and Funeral Expenses? How is the amount determined?
Spouses or common-law partners and dependents of a person killed in a motor vehicle accident receive death payments. For spouses and common-law partners, it depends on the age of the victim and income and ranges from $68,180 to $540,000(2022). Dependents with disabilities and the dependents of a deceased single parent receive an additional payment.
What are Special Expenses?
Compensation for an injured person:
- Whose main occupation was taking care of others without pay;
- Who was working full-time while also caring for a child under the age of 16 or while caring for someone who’s not employable; or
- Who was working for free for a family business. This coverage provides funds to hire someone to do the work that the injured person can no longer do. It also includes travel expenses to get to medical appointments.
How is the compensation level determined under the Student Indemnity coverage?
It is determined based on grade level:
a) K - Gr8 receive a maximum of $5,794 (2022)
b) Gr9 - Gr12 receive a maximum of $10,738 (2022)
c) post-secondary educational program receive a maximum of $21,479 (2022)
Who might be eligible for a Permanent Impairment Payment?
Individuals who are catastrophically injured.
Explain coverage under the Personal Care Expenses.
This covers costs of paying someone to help the injured person with personal care, housekeeping, shopping and similar approved services when the injured person is unable to care for him or herself and to perform essential activities of everyday life without assistance.
Give examples of excluded injuries under PIPP.
Maintaining, repairing, altering or improving a vehicle.
Who is covered under third party liability?
- The owner
- Any other licensed driver who personally drives the automobile with the consent of the Named Insured.
