Manipulation of the immune system Flashcards
Define the MOA for H1 receptor antagonists
Block H1 receptors
What are H1 receptor antagonists used for?
Used for allergies, conjunctivitis, reactions to insect bites
Name some examples of antihistamines
Chlorpheniramine, Cetirizine, Loratadine, Fexofenadine, Promethazine
What is the aim of anti-inflammatory drugs?
Reduce inflammation and swelling
Also reduce pain (by preventing inflammation)
Define the MOA of aspirin
Blocking the cyclooxygenase enzyme
Name the 2 isoforms cyclooxygenase exists in
COX-1 - constitutive ‘housekeeping’ enzyme - products important for normal function of stomach
COX-2 - induced - especially during inflammation - produces even more prostaglandins
Name some commonly used NSAIDs
Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Naproxen, Flurbiprofen, Diclofenac sodium, Mefenamic acid, Celecoxib, Etoricoxib
Name some side effects associated with NSAIDS
Gastric irritation - PGE2 is involved in inhibition of gastric acid secretion, increased gastric mucus production
Bleeding - TXA2 involved in platelet aggregation and vasoconstriction
