  • iago’s cryptic and elliptical manner of speaking hides as much as it reveals. This speech pattern of paradoxes and riddles is emblematic of iago’s power throughout the play. The smallest sentences (“think, my Lord?) and gestures (beckoning othello closer in act 4 scene 1) can be open to endless interpretation.

  • Iago speaks warns othello of a monster, though is creating one himself by playing othello against himself
  • by giving warning, Iago manipulates othello’s view of him, to make it appear as if he was not the totally fuelling the passionate rage, but trying to ease it.
