What was the significance of the Ohio River Basin/Valley?

A

-extremely fertile (big attraction for Southerners)
-Governor of Virginia makes deal. offers plots of land on OHB for low price to escape overcrowded place of Virginia to his people.
Drawbacks: going to encounter Native Americans and French

A

It was uncharted and so there was a debate over who owned land (Native Americans, Britain, or France)

So the Virginia militia was lead by George Washington. The militia was no match for the French.

A

Basically France VS Britain (Britain wins)

  • Indians sided with France because believed French would help them
  • French lose so have to give up territory
  • Britain disallows anyone from going past Appalachian mountains. Colonists mad because they fought!

A

-resided in Georgia
-overall very peaceful
-want to be Americans
-willing to go through steps like CONVERTING TO CHRISTIANITY
1827 - drafted own constitution and sent to Congress
-basically took 1st part of Preamble
-God is referenced as “Ruler of the Universe”
-their religion is nature and spirits and stuff
-wanted to show that they were open to American government

  • modeled after H.o.R. (25 years old)
  • have to be free, male, Cherokee to have position
  • CANNOT have any African descent. but you see, Cherokees ARE a racial minority. they harbor the same stereotypes as whites would with the blacks
  • adopting racist persona to differentiate themselves from Black community

  • so they wanted to get all blacks in texas
