Abductor- movement separating the fingers
Adductor- movement drawing the fingers together
What are the three classic massage movements?
Effleurage- establish relaxation during massage and used to link more active movements
Petrissage- kneading movement, increases circulation and decreases muscle tension
Tapotment- rhythmic tapping or hacking used mostly on athletes to help sore and tired muscles
List 5 required manicure tools needed during a treatment.
Manicure bowl- to hold fingers/hands comfortably while soaking
Nail file- to shape, shorten and smooth the free edge
Cuticle pusher- to loosen cuticle around base of nail and push back excess cuticle
Orange stick- used to apply softener onto the nails cuticles
Nail clippers- to remove excess nail length of the free edge

Apply cuticle cream/oil each night before bed
Use a file on rough edges or split nails
Use a good quality top coat to prevent chipping
Use hand cream regularly
Use acetone-free nail polish remover

Nail soaking solution- to remove dirt and helps soften the nail and cuticles
Cuticle remover and softener- loosen and release cuticle skin cells and easy removal of the cuticle
Hand cream- used during massages
Hot oil- used during massages
Nail polish remover- removes nail polish from nail plate
Nail polish- high gloss lacquers applied to colour the nails
Bases coat- clear polish applied before nail polish
Top coat- a clear polish applied over colour
How do you determine the shape of a clients nails?
By observing the nails natural shape which is similar to the fingertip shape.
Who would you recommend a paraffin wax for and way?
To somebody who has dry skin and elderly clients because the hot wax can help smooth and hydrate their skin, also soothes aching muscles
What is a bunion?
Painful swelling on the first joint of the big toe
What is callous?
Section of skin that has become thick and hard caused by friction or pressure
What is Tina pedis?
Fungal infection of the feet also known as fungus
What is onychocryptosis?
Ingrown toenail, occurs when part of the nail penetrates the skin
What is tinea unguium?
Fungal infection of the nail tissue on the hands and feet
How would you clean a pedicure and manicure bowl ?
Empty liquid out of bowl down drain
Rinse with hot water
Disinfect and scrub
Rinse again and dry

Is an allied health professional who specializes in treating the feet
When during a pedicure do you include rasping ?
Before exfoliating and massaging the clients feet
