Mangroves Flashcards
What happens when there is high tide and low tide in mangroves ?
When there is high tide mangroves flood of salt water
When there is low tide mangroves are dry
However when there is low tide mangroves can still flood of fresh water because of heavy rain or water from rivers
Where are mangroves located ?
Mangroves are located at the intertidal zone
What are mangroves ?
Mangroves are trees and shrubs that live on the intertidal zone and have part of their roots in the land and part of their roots in the sea. They capture a lot of carbon , filter sea water and slow down wave energy .
Advantages of mangroves.
- Mangroves are blue carbon ecosystems so they absorbs large amounts of CO2 from the air ( through photosynthesis ) and they store the CO2 for thousands of years. This removes some of the excess CO2 in the atmosphere , which therefore helps to slow down the warming of our planet , slowing down global warming.
- Mangroves absorb wave energy. This reduces the force of tsunamis , storm surges and erosion caused by high tide. Therefore, the impact of these natural hazards is less destructive and less severe.
- Mangroves filter the oceans water. They do this by trapping dust , chemicals , pollutants and even bacteria etc into their roots which cleanses the water. Therefore the water is safer for fish , coral reefs , and for swimming or fishing.
Disadvantages of mangroves.
Pollution: pollutants like plastic clogs their tangles roots , blocking the roots from obtaining water and mineral ions for the plant. And pollution slowly kills mangroves because toxic chemicals poisons their soil.
Analyse the impact of human activity on mangroves.
Deforestation : Humans cut down mangroves to be able to clear the land and build on the land to boost the economy.
negatively impacts us because we need mangroves to reduce global warming
Also loss of habitats for species
Also loss of coastal protection
Loss of ocean being cleansed
