Mangroves Flashcards
What are mangroves?
Coastal forests that grow in saline, oxygen-deficient soils.
What are the ecological features of mangroves?
Tropical forests dominated by halophytic trees.
Live in inter-tidal areas
Survive in extreme conditions
Why are mangroves important?
High biodiversity providing a habitat
Coastal erosion protection, vegetation and roots of mangroves absorb energy of waves reducing the impact from storms.
Fisheries, providing nursey grounds, dense roots protect young from predators
Protect coral reefs by allow sedimentation to be deposited by roots and by absorbing nutrients from farmland stopping overgrowth of algae of coral.
