What and where are mangroves?
A
Mangroves are woody trees or shrubs which flourish at
sea/land interface in tropical estuaries and inlets. Whole “forest” habitat = mangal
Generally found within 20°C isotherm – like corals!
Replaced by saltmarshes at higher latitudes

- low tidal range & strong
freshwater flow - Tide-dominated mangroves
- fully intertidal
- water often full strength

- high wave action
- “fringing” mangroves - Basin mangroves
- landward side of fringing

- salinity highly variable
(rainfall & evaporation)
- low currents
