Standard Care for Edentulous pt as of 2002:
Mandibular 2 implant overdenture
3 types of overdentures:
tissue supported-implant retained, tissue-implant supported, implant retained, implant supported-implant retained
Adv of implant overdentures:
min ant bone less, esthetics, stability and retention, occlusion, dec denture base irritation, chewing efficiency and force, support, red prost size, expanded maxillofacial applications, occlusal efficiency, speech
Adv of overdentures vs fixed:
fewer implants (cost and morbidity red), placement not as critical, esthetics (flanges compensate for residual ridge bone loss), hygiene acces, red occlusal stress dec need for bone grafting
Disadv to overdentures:
psychological need for removable teeth, amt of resto space req, long term maintenance (attachments, relines, and fractures), new prosthesis req, bone loss, food impaction, movement, retention varies w # of implants
