Mandibular Local Anesthesia Injections - Adult Flashcards
In the IA, what structures are anesthetized?
- lower lip
- pulps of teeth in the quadrant
- buccal periodontium from central incisor to 2nd PM
In the IA, what is the injection site and anatomical landmark?
- 2/3 to 3/4 the distance from coronoid notch to pterygomandibular fold (raphe) - next to fold
- 6-10 mm above occlusal plane
AL: mandibular foramen
In the IA, what is the path of the needle? Do you contact bone?
opposite1st or 2nd PM and parallel to occlusal plane; yes bone is contacted
In the IA, what amount is deposited?
1/2 cart for IA and lingual
In the IA, what is the length of the needle?
long
In the Ling, what structures are anesthetized?
- lingual periodontium of the quadrant
- anterior 2/3 of the tongue
- floor of the mouth
In the Ling, what is the injection site and anatomical landmark?
same as IA
AL: none
In the Ling, what is the path of the needle?
same as IA
In the Ling, what amount is deposited?
1/8 cart (0.2-0.3 mL)
In the Ling, what length needle is used?
long
In the B, what structures are anesthetized?
buccal periodontium of molars
In the B, what is the injection site and anatomical landmark?
buccal mucosa distal and buccal to most distal molar
AL: none
In the B, what is the path of the needle?
parallel to the occlusal plane
In the B, what is the depth of insertion? Do you contact bone?
about 2 mm
contact bone is likely but not required
In the B, what amount is deposited?
1/8 cart (0.3 mL)
In the B, what length needle is used?
long
In the I, what structures are anesthetized?
- lower lip
- pulps and facial periodontium of teeth from mental foramen to the midline
In the I, what is the injection site and anatomical landmark?
near muccobuccal fold btwn mand 1st and 2nd PM
AL: mental foramen
In the I, what is the path of the needle?
parallel to the long axis of the PMs
In the I, what is the depth of insertion? Do you contact bone?
about 5 mm
contact bone: no
What are special considerations during the I?
after injection, apply pressure for 2 min
In the I, what amount is deposited?
1/3 to 1/2 cart (0.6-0.9 mL)
In the I, what length of needle is used?
short
In the SP, what structures are anesthetized?
pulps facial (or lingual) periodontium of tooth anesthetized
