Q

“How would you describe your communications skills”

A

I have developed very good communication skills throughout my training.

One of my main strengths is being able to convey information in a clear and structure document way. During my A&E attachment I was able to demonstrate this skill and the feedback I received from patients was that I had put them at ease by taking the time to explain things clearly.

I have grown to understand the importance of being assertive whilst being able to negotiate. Countless times I have found myself in situations where I have been asked to do something I didn’t feel competent to do and was able to express my opinion tactfully in order to maintain good working relationships with usually very senior colleagues. E.g Blood cultures from Hickman got a trained nurse from the haematology ward to do it. I have been able to effectively handle situations that involve angry relatives or patients. I have listened to their concerns and tried to find ways to de-escalate the situation.

Q

“What is the difference between management and leadership?”

A

Leadership is setting a new direction or vision and developing a team.

Management is about controlling and directing people and resources according to already established rules.

Leadership without management = new direction without thinking about how to achieve. E.g Not accepting referrals without XR

Management without leadership = managing resources but makes no real change.

Q

“What makes a good team player?”

A

A good team player understands their role in a team and how they fit into the bigger picture.

Reliable - always delivers
Consistent - always delivers
Involves the team - let’s people know when they’ve made decisions or changed plans rather than alienating people
Considerate - not leaving jobs for the night SHO to do when they can easily get them done before the end of their shift

As a member of any team I endeavour to be reliable. If I’m handed a task I do everything in my power to get it done. I like to know that people feel they can count on me that if they give me a task as far as I am able it will be done. For example if I’m on call on a weekend with a limited number of staff, I may be asked to perform minor operations in the clinic while the registrar goes to start the acutes list and that helps to alleviate some of their work load.

I ensure I am consistent and produce high quality work not based on whether or not someone is watching but based on my own personal work ethic and values. I. Always ensure before I end a night shift that all patients that need to be are booked onto the acutes list, the handover is updated and admissions are fully prepped for theatre.

Finally I strongly value courtesy. If I make a significant decision I communicate that to my other team members as they may be called upon regarding a decision I’ve made and it could be frustrating or even dangerous if other team members aren’t aware. Also I avoid handing over jobs to other junior doctors that I can do before I finish my shift.

Q

“An example of a situation where you failed as a team player.”

A

Not getting XR transferred across form other hospitals for trauma clinic. Patients had to wait for XR to be transferred or have another set. Had to refuse to accept referrals until XR were on our system. Meant less delay in trauma clinic
