Managing Volcanic Hazards Flashcards
1
Q
How can you predict volcanic eruptions?
A
- Change in gas concentration
- Land deformation
- Ground vibration
- Remote sensing
2
Q
How can is gas concentration measures?
A
Measures by radon gas / SO²
3
Q
How is land deformation measured?
A
Tilt meters, which detects changes in the shape of the volcano.
This was used on Mount Saint Helens where the shape changed by 1.5 per day.
4
Q
How is ground vibration measured?
A
It is measured by GPS - the movement of the unit shows change.
5
Q
What does remote sensing measure?
A
Satellites measure the change in elevation.
Thermal images may also be used.
6
Q
Methods to prevent/protect from an eruption?
A
- Bomb it
- Cool it with water
- Build a barrier
- Add concrete
