What are some effective ways to communicate with others?
Spoken messages (e.g. Conversations, talking on the phone, etc.)
Body messages (e.g. Sign language, facial expressions, tone, hand gestures, etc.)
Written messages (e.g. Texting, notes, letters, email, etc.)
How can you become a more effective communicator?
Speak clearly and concisely
Use body language with verbal language
Make eye contact
Use the right tone with the message (written messages cause problems here)
What are some barriers to communication?
Not listening Delayed feedback Poor use of technology Dishonesty Telling people what they want to hear, not what they need to hear (tricky)
What are 2 strategies that demand the use of great communication?
Negotiation and Compromise
This process may involve clearly communicating an agreement whereby one partner or both parties are required to give a little to resolve a disputed. It might not bring a win-win situation but both partners will compromise and reach an agreement.
‘I’ Statements
Using ‘I’ statements is a great way to take responsibility for your actions and avoid criticising someone else’s actions. Try to use ‘I’ at the start of a sentence and not ‘you’. The use of the word ‘you’ shifts blame and feelings to the other party.
