Managing Our Envoirnment Flashcards

1
Q

What is the green house effect?

A

A Natural process whereby heat from the sun is trapped in our atmosphere by “greenhouse gasses”. Without it the earth would be 33 degrees cooler and would never be able to sustain life

5
Q

Advantage and disadvantages of calculating carbon footprint

A

Consumers can easily grasp the impacts of what they are doing

It is difficult to calculate, especially when goods are imported from other countries

Q

Sunspot activity

A

Darker patches on the sun, these form at the areas where the magnetic field is particularly strong. The energy is so strong that it can keep some of the energy within the dun from reaching the surface

Q

Volcanoes

A

Large volumes of sulphuric oxide, water vapor dust and ash into the atmosphere. These gases and dust particles particularly block the incoming rays of the sun, leading to cooling.

Q

Cars/human greenhouse effects

A

The exhaust of cars and lorries emit polluting gases, such as nitrogen dioxide which adds to green house emissions.

Q

Coal/human greenhouse effects

A

When coal, oil or gas is being burned in power stations to generate electricity it releases carbon dioxide which adds to the greenhouse effects

11
Q

Methane

A

Methane production from large number of cattle’s is increasing very quickly and so is nitrogen dioxide. This adds to the greenhouse effect

Q

Consequences of climate change

A

Sea levels rising - by up to 2m - due to thermal expansion. Could result in sea levels rising
Precipitation changes-rainfall will be more unreliable, could result in some places being wetter and some being drier. Could result in a change of climate in certain places
Tourism - snow in the alps may be less resulting in the reduction of conditions for skiers and having a negative effect on economy

16
Q

What is a resource

A

A resource is anything that is useful to us

17
Q

What is waste management

A

Waste management is what we do with the waste society generates

18
Q

Waste hierarchy

A

Reduce
Reuse
Recycle
Dispose

The waste hierarchy shows how reducing, reusing and recycling materials can help prevent waste, increased reusing and recycling are good for the environment

19
Q

Ways to reduce waste

A

Turn off the tap when brushing your teeth
Read the newspaper online
Choose products with less packaging

20
Q

What is renewable energy

A

Energy from a source that is not depleted when used

21
Q

Examples of renewable energy

A

Solar energy
Wind energy
Hydro power
Ocean energy
Bio energy

22
Q

How is wind power captured

A

Turbines use blades to collect the winds kinetic energy

23
Q

Benefits of wind power

A

Good for the environment, doesn’t produce any carbon emissions
The wind farms use inexhaustible energy
Helps the uk be less dependent on non-renewable energy sources
Will produce energy relatively cheaply

24
Q

Disadvantages to wind farms

A

Can hard wildlife as wind turbines create their own electrical fields
Some people find wind turbines ugly and could potentially deter tourists as the do not want to see these from the coast line
Turbines take a lot of money to set up, walney wind farm cost over 10000000 to set up. However, it should give a constant return for over 20 years after with minimal maintenance
There has to be backup systems in case there is too little wind or the wind is too strong to operate safely

25
Q

Mass tourism

A

Mass tourism is large scale movements of people to tourist destinations and can have a negative impact on the relationship of the locals and the visitors

26
Q

Time

A

Increased leisure time lead to people having longer holidays

27
Q

Money

A

Increased disposable income along with shortened working week meant more money for less time

28
Q

Holiday prices

A

Travel has become increasingly more affordable so it brought destinations further away much more accessible to more people

29
Q

People and health

A

People living healthier and longer lives means that more people are available to travel. Older people are able to take longer tropes due to increased money and time

30
Q

Economic impacts

A

Positive - Created jobs (hotels, resultants) for local people this income can be spent in local shops/ services to boost the economy
Negative - MNCS own hotel chains - lots of profits sent abroad

31
Q

Cultural impacts

A

Positive impacts - preservation of historical and cultural landmarks
Adds value to the traditions and culture of the area
Negative - some western tourists behave in an inappropriate way with no understanding or respect for the culture of the country they are visiting
This has resulted in the tourists being arrested and in local people being offended. It has led to diplomatic rows between governments

32
Q

Environmental impacts

A

Positive - governments and local people will attract more tourists if they look after the environment
Negative - litter
Transport emissions
Water being used for tourists/ golf courses/pools instead of local farms

33
Q

Ecotourism

A

A sustainable form of tourism which involves protecting the environment at the destination and the local way of life. It is travel that makes a positive impact on both ecology and economy of a destination
