Managing ecosystems Flashcards
1
Q
What is managing an ecosystem?
A
- we will provide resources in a sustainable way - conservation
2
Q
What are the two managing techniques?
A
timber production and fishing
3
Q
How do you manage timber production?
A
coppising - cutting trees down without killing them e.g. by cutting in the trunk or stem strip - cut trees down in blocks or strips - killing a tree but not all trees in the area replanting trees (protect young trees) plant native trees
4
Q
How do you manage fishing?
A
- fishing quatas - limits the number of fish caught
- regulate the mesh size of nets
- protect important areas by stopping fishing there
5
Q
What are the benefits of management in fishing?
A
- reduces the number of fish caught to prevent species extinction
- protect the breeding population
- reduce by catch
- only fish of a certain size will be caught
- protect fish while they are spawning
6
Q
What are the benefits of managing timber production?
A
- grow back faster
- don’t need to plant new trees (coppising)
- less disruption to the ecosystem
- maintains biodiversity
- less errosion / leaching (strip felling)
- prevents shoots being eaten by animals
