Q
Sweet Mothers & Gangbangers (Pattillo)
A
- Middle class black neighbourhood in chicago called “Groveland”
↳ In groveland there are high ranking gov’t officals and high level gang members living together (live and interact with each other) - Extremely tight networks between “responsible” and “deviant” residents
↳ Looks at how residential stabiliy and network density can both facilitate and impede social control - Black middle class resembles the white lower class due to racism, so black middle class are liekly to be in neighbourhood with high crime rates
2
Q
Patillo: Stable, low-income areas
A
- Socail disorganization: the inability of a community to realize the common values of its residents & maintain effective social control
- Explanation: while internally regulated, these negihbourhoods lack essential ties to public reforms of social control
- Groveland challenges the social disorganzation theory
3
Q
Patillo Theory
A
- In stable, low-income areas, organized criminal subcultures (gangs) may form
- This alternative opportunity structure(criminal groups) can benefit criminal & non-criminal residents
- Neighbourhood delinquents can procide important socal and economic resouces to their lawful family, friends, neighbours

Q
Patillo Findings
A
1) Black middle class neighbourhoods have higher poverty rates & are closer to poor areas
↳ unique form of social organization as there us high internal organization and low external social control
2) High proportions of low income makes crime attractive some people
3) Residents have formed ties because of home ownership and residential stability. These facilitate formal and informal social control
4) These ties also hinder efforts to rid the neighbourhood of crime (because of close networks between “responsible” and “deviant” residents)

Q
Gang Members in Groveland
A
- Black mobsters
- Have interest in keeping groveland as a safe and “quiet neighbourhood”
↳ Act as agents of social control - Middle class drug dealers - Black mobster
↳ They sell drugs in a very implicit way, make sure there’s no drug houses in the neighbourhood & only sell to ‘lawns’ because they don’t deal to people in the neighbourhood
↳ confrom to “middle-class norms” - There’s an argument that having gangs in the neighbourhood is better for it as it keeps crime rates low
↳ they operate as a middle class and sell drugs to drug dealers, they’re similar to the middle class as in they work a similar job just no legitimate one
