Managing Coasts In A Holistic Way Flashcards
What is an integrated costal zone management?
ICZM - the complete sections of coast are now being managed as a whole - rather than by individual towns/villages
Why are ICZM’s used?
Human actions in one place will affect other places further along the coast - sediment moves in sediment cells
What are the aims of ICZM’s?
Establish sustainable levels of economic and social activity
Resolve environmental, social and economic challenges and conflicts
Protect the coastal environment
What are options for coastal management?
Hold the line
Advance the line
Managed retreat
Do nothing
What is holding the line?
Maintaining the current position of the coastline
Often using hard engineering
What is advancing the line?
Involves extending the coastline out to sea
By encouraging the build-up of a wider beach - using beach nourishment methods and groyne construction.
What is managed retreat?
Involves allowing the coastline to retreat, but in a managed way
What is do nothing?
Letting nature take its course and allowing the sea to erode cliffs and flooding low-lying land
What is an SMP?
Shoreline management plan
Sets out the policy for managing coastline and responding to coastal erosion.
What are CBA’s?
Cost benefit analysis - the cost of the defences and the benefit this would bring to the economy
