Managing climate change and weather hazards Flashcards
What is mitigation?
the reducing or preventing of greenhouse gases, which cause climate change and protect carbon sinks (forests)
Describe alternate energy production
As pop grows we need more energy (like oils) which causes climate change, so renewable energy sources (solar, wind, geothermal, wave, tidal) reduce the volume of greenhouse gases.
United Nations environment programmed investments reached a high of $211 billion in 2010
Describe solar energy
3.8% of the UK’s energy was solar, when light shines on solar panels it creates an electrical field and saves over a tonne of CO2 as there are no greenhouse gases
Describe Carbon capture
carbon capture and storage could provide 10-55% of the worlds carbon mitigation by capturing co2 from emission sources and safely storing, but also removing CO2 and converting to a liquid and injected to a sedimentary rock with impermeable cap
How does carbon capture help?
save UK £30 billion a year in meeting climate targets, by 2050 it could provide more than 20% of the UK’s electricity
Describe planting trees
occurs at 13 million hectacres a year but there is a $40 billion investment in reforestation and payments to landholders for conservation from 2010-2050 and increase forest carbon storage 28%. the uk has a £24.9 million project to reduce deforestation and also reducing 10.71 million tones of CO2
Describe international agreements
UN negotiated an agreement for countries at 2015 paris conference from 2020 to reduce global emissions by 40% below 2010 levels by 2030 and 60% by 2060
What is adaptation?
responds to the impact and how to make them less vulnerable and are local
describe changes in agricultural systems
moving production due to temp and weather, increasing irrigation, changing crops and varieties gown at the time of year they are planted
also potato park in peru
describe managing water supply
london consumes 167l of water compared to 146l average
reduce demand by having all homes by 2030 to have retrofit package
increase supply by desalination plant by thames with reverse osmosis to supply 400,000 homes and power 8,000
