Managing Climate Change Flashcards
Topic 2
Mitigation
What does mitigation mean?
It means reducing the causes (of climate change). There are lots of ways that climate change can be mitigated.
Mitigation
What does adaptation mean?
It means changing the ways we behave in order to adapt to climate change.
Mitigation
List the ways to reduce (mitigate) the causes of climate change
- Planting Trees
- Different energy production
- Carbon capture
- International agreements
Mitigation
Explain how alternative energy production reduces the causes of climate change
Give examples of alternative energy production methods
By reducing the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere, via using cleaner energy production methods, we are no longer contributing to climate change and therefore reducing the carbon thickness that traps the sun’s radiation.
wind, solar, wave
Mitigation
Explain how carbon capture reduces the causes of climate change
Capturing carbon reduces the amount of it in the atmosphere. Carbon thickens the atmosphere and traps the sun’s radiation, so reducing the amount of it in the atmosphere will reduce the amount of heat that becomes trapped, reducing one of the key causes of climate change.
Mitigation
What is carbon capture?
It is technology that is used to extract CO2 from the atmosphere. It is then injected into the ground and stored as a carbon sink.
Mitigation
Explain how planting trees reduces the causes of climate change
Trees take in CO2 for photosynthesis. This means more trees there are, there will be less CO2 in the atmosphere, reducing carbon thickness.
(Trees store CO2)
Mitigation
Explain how international agreements reduces the causes of climate change
It is important that countries work together to reduce climate change. The kyoto protocol ensures that both HIC’s and LIC’s are working towards reducing carbon emissions.
Mitigation
What are international climate agreements?
What are some examples
These encourage governments to set carbon emission targets, to increasse alternative energy production and to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.
Kyoto protocol, Paris agreement
What are the strategies for adapting to climate change?
- Changing agricultural systems
- Managing water supply
- Reducing risk from rising sea levels
Explain how changing agricultural systems help us adapt to climate change
DESCRIBE THE STRATEGY, WHAT IS IT ACTUALLY?
Educating farmers in watering techniques and introducing new irrigation systems
Explain how changing agricultural systems help us adapt to climate change
EXPLAIN HOW IT ALLOWS HUMANS TO ADAPT TO CLIMATE CHANGE
Education is important in order to prevent water loss. Irrigation systems are used in order to prevent wasting water and therefore increasing agricultural yield.
Explain how managing water supply help us adapt to climate change
DESCRIBE THE STRATEGY, WHAT IS IT ACTUALLY?
Building dams are used to store fresh water in big resevoirs for future use. Also, water supply projects are set up in areas in the upper course or rivers in Asia.
Explain how managing water supply help us adapt to climate change
EXPLAIN HOW IT ALLOWS HUMANS TO ADAPT TO CLIMATE CHANGE
Building dams allows fresh water to be stored and released when needed. This means that more fresh water is available and doesn’t travel straight to the oceans. Water held in projects is frozen and released in spring when it melts.
Explain how reducing risk from rising sea levels help us adapt to climate change
DESCRIBE THE STRATEGY, WHAT IS IT ACTUALLY?
Sea walls are built out of concrete. Mangroves are plants whose roots bind sediment together. Houses are built on stilts.
