Management Of Climate Change Flashcards
1
Q
How can alternative energy sources mitigate climate change?
A
Renewable energy sources ( solar / wind / nuclear … ) reduce carbon emissions as they do not require the combustion of fossil fuels.
2
Q
How can carbon capture and storage ( CCS ) mitigate climate change?
A
- Capturing and transferring CO2 that is produced in industrial processes means that it is not released into the atmosphere.
- However, it is a developing technology that is dependent on an area’s geology.
3
Q
How can afforestation mitigate climate change?
A
- Trees sequester residual CO2 from the atmosphere through photosynthesis.
- Trees also produce moisture ; forming clouds that reflect insolation.
4
Q
How can international agreements mitigate climate change?
A
- Kyoto Protocol : included over 55 countries that set a target to reduce CO2 emissions by at least 5% of 1990 levels.
- Paris Climate Agreement : 195 countries agreed to limit the increase of temperature to 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels.
- UK targets : reduce energy consumption by 15% by 2030, reduce CO2 emissions by 45% by 2030.
