what are the goals of asthma management?
Goals of asthma treatment are minimal symptoms during day and night, minimal need for reliever medication (less than 2 times a week), no attacks, and no limitation on physical activity
what does SANE stand for?
SABA (are you using your blue inhaler more than 2 days a week? If so, poorly controlled)
Absence from school/nursery?
Nocturnal symptoms (are they waking more than one night a week as result? If so, poorly controlled)
exertion symptoms?
what are the 2 common asthma treatments given?
SABA - blue reliever medication (salbutamol)
inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) - brown preventative treatment, given to diagnose asthma as well. (example is beclomethasone)
what are the add-on treatments for asthma?
LABA’s
Leukotriene receptor antagonists
theophylline’s
for younger children, what is the first line preventer?
ICS or leukotriene receptor antagonists
in older children and adults, it is just ICS
what are the adverse effects of ICS?
height reduction (1cm max) and oral thrush if dont brush teeth after usage
what are the two common types of ICS?
budesonide and beclomethasone
