He role of leadership is changing. Traditionally leadership has been associated with the need to command and control and take decision
However, in modern business the role of leadership is increasingly about:
- Inspiring employers
- creating a vision
- shaping the core values & culture of the business
- building effective teams
Following factors suggest a move away from autocratic leadership
- change in society’s values
- better — educated workforce
- focus on need for soft HR skills
- changing workforce organisation
- greater workplace legislation
- pressure for greater employee involvement
Authoritarian
- Focus of power is with the manager
- Characterised by individual control over all decisions and input from group members.
- Make choices based on their idea and judgement and rarely accept advice from followers.
Paternalistic
- Leader decides what is best for employees
- managerial approach that involves a dominant authority figure who acts as a patriarch or matriarch
- treats employees and partners as though they are members of a large family
Democratic
- Focus if power is more with the group as a whole
- the group takes more participation role in the decision making process
Laissez - faire
- leader has little input into a day to day decision making
