Physical and mental effort required to complete a task. Can be variable or fixed.

Total instrument cost (divided by) useful life in years
Cost analysis
Process of determining the price of laboratory testing
Break Even Point (BEP)
Determines the point at which the cost for the volume of tests equals the revenue generated
Operating Leverage (OL)
Ratio or index that tells the % of change in total profit that will result from a given change in revenue
Cost per reportable test
Total direct costs + total indirect costs (divided by) reportable tests

When volume is too low to justify cost of reagents, staff training, etc.
