Frederick Taylor
Developed Scientific management. from a wealthy family in Philadelphia. Obsessed with efficiency and optimizing.
Henry Grantt
Provided rates based on productivity and advocated for bonuses when quotas are exceeded.
Frank and Lillian Gilbreth
They worked on increasing efficiency in management and hospitals. later, studies focused on minimizing the stress of the worker.
Hawthorne Effect
The need for recognition, security, and a sense of belonging supersede the physical working conditions.
George Elton Mayo
Harvard professor of industrial research. studied high turnover rates of textile mill workers. Developed The Foundation for Human Relations Movement.
Theory X
tend to take a pessimistic view of their people, and assume that they are naturally unmotivated and dislike work. Work in organizations that are managed like this can be repetitive, and people are often motivated with a “carrot and stick” approach.
Theory Y
people are self-motivated and enjoy the challenge of work. Managers with this assumption have a more collaborative relationship with their people and motivate them by allowing them to work on their own initiative, giving them responsibility, and empowering them to make decisions.
