Q

Define Hyper-V

A

Hyper-V can subdivide the hardware capacity of a single host computer by allocating the host’s hardware resources to multiple VMs. Hyper-V provides an isolated space for each VM to run its own operating system (OS) that’s independent of the host’s OS and other VMs.

Q

When you install the Hyper-V Server role, a software layer known as the hypervisor is inserted into the boot process. The hypervisor controls access to the host’s physical hardware. Hardware drivers are installed only in the host OS (also known as the parent partition). All VMs running on the host communicate only with virtualized hardware.

The Hyper-V hypervisor takes full control of the hardware virtualization capabilities and doesn’t expose them to the guest operating system (guest OS).

Other methods to manage Hyper-V on Windows Server

A

Windows PowerShell

PowerShell Direct
You can use the Enter-PSSession cmdlet to connect to a VM. After connecting to the VM, you can issue PowerShell
cmdlets directly on the VM.

Windows Admin Center

Q

Why Deploy VMs on separate disks

A

The host server’s OS and the VM files should be stored on separate disks, because:

Using separate disks minimizes contention by ensuring that any disk read/write operations required by the VM files
don't conflict with read/write operations required by the host's OS.

Using separate disks enables the host's OS volume to grow, without consuming all of the disk space that's available
            to the VM files.

You should use SSDs where possible because SSDs have faster read-write speeds and consume less power than standard HDDs.

Q

Hyper-V should be the only server role installed on the host server

A

You should ensure that Hyper-V is the only server role installed on the host server. Don’t install the Hyper-V role with other roles such as the domain controller or the file server role. Each role you deploy on a server requires resources. When you deploy Hyper-V, you want to ensure that each VM has access to as many of the host’s resources as possible.

Q

Manage Hyper-V remotely

A

When you sign in to a server locally, your session consumes server resources. Instead of signing in locally to perform administrative tasks, configure your Hyper-V Server for remote management. This approach enables hosted VMs to utilize as many of the Hyper-V host’s resources as possible.

A configuration error on a Hyper-V host can cause downtime for all of the guest VMs. To minimize the potential for disruptive downtime, you should restrict access to the Hyper-V Server so that only administrators who are responsible for VM management can make connections.

Q

What are the 3 Virtual switch types and what do each do?

A

Internal An internal virtual switch is used to communicate between each of the VMs on a Hyper-V host, and to communicate between the VMs and the Hyper-V host.

External An external virtual switch is used to map a network to a specific network adapter or network adapter team. Hyper-V also supports mapping an external network to a wireless network adapter. To map an external network to a wireless adapter, install the Wireless local area network (LAN) service on the Hyper-V host server and ensure that the Hyper-V Server has a compatible network adapter.

Private A private switch facilitates communication between the VMs on the same Hyper-V host. Private switches can’t be used to communicate between the Hyper-V host and VMs.

Q

Virtual switch extensions
Independent software vendors (ISVs) can create extensible plug-ins known as virtual switch extensions. A virtual switch extension is an extension that runs inside a Hyper-V Virtual Switch to provide enhanced networking and security capabilities.

There are three classes of virtual switch extensions: capture, filtering, and forwarding.

Q

What is nested virtualization?

A

Nested virtualization is a Hyper-V feature that you can use to install and run Hyper-V inside a guest VM. It’s a virtualized environment running inside a virtualized environment. Nested virtualization enables a guest VM to be a Hyper-V host, which can then host other guest VMs. Nested virtualization can be extremely useful for implementing virtual test and development environments that would otherwise require physical hardware to run.
