MANMADE BOARDS -
MEDIUM DENSITY FIBRE BOARD (MDF)

MDF

A

A quality board, relatively cheap. Composed of fine wood dust and resin pressed into a board.

Can be worked, shaped and machined easily. Paint can be applied to it, without the need for an undercoat or primer (although finishes better with an MDF primer).

Used widely in the building, shop fitting and furniture trades.

Q

advantages of MDF

A

MDF has economic value to common people as it is cheaper at cost and inexpensive. So, they are within everyone’s reach to purchase.
MDF saves trees as it is recycling process.
MDF does not have knots or kinks which disturbs the smooth surface.
MDF is resistant to some insects as some chemicals are used for the processing of MDF.
it can be painted or stained to look just like wood. After you install it, you can apply paint, and when you do this, most people will not be able to tell you’ve used a cheaper substitute for real wood. You’ll have the look of wood for a fraction of the price

Q

disadvantage of MDF

A

Medium density fiberboard is weak compared to real wood. This means that when you install it, there is a good chance that it could split or crack under a lot of stress. You will need to be very careful about where you’re going use it and what you’re using it to hold so you can make sure it won’t fail.

nails

A

does not take nails very well. When you hammer a nail into it You will get a “volcano” effect on the outside. When this happens, you will need to sand down the outside of the MDF to get something just as smooth. This means your projects will take a little more work than you would have had to do with real wood.

more disadvantages with MDF

3 points

A

Because it’s so dense, MDF is very heavy which can make it more difficult to work with.
MDF can’t be stained. Not only does it soak up stain like a sponge but because there’s no wood grain on MDF, it looks awful when it’s stained.
MDF contains VOCs (eg. urea-formaldehyde) so care needs to be taken while cutting and sanding to avoid inhalation of the particles

Q

the manufacturing process of MDF

A
  1. wood shavings and chips are thrown into a presteaming bin where steam is injected to heat and soften the material.
  2. the chips are coated with molten paraffin wax. This glues the chips together. The glued chips are then dried by transporting through hot air dryer.
  3. chips are then fed into the defibrator for few minutes under high temperature while they are ground to form a pulp. From the defibrator, the pulp enters a blowline, where it is mixed with resin,
