Mammalian Anatomy Flashcards
Vein
To heart
Artery
Away from heart
Pulmonary Artery
Brings CO2 rich blood to the lungs
Pulmonary Vein
Bring O2 rich blood to the heart
Jugular Vein
Bring blood from head and arms to Superior Vena Cava
Carotid Artery
Brings blood from heart to the head and arms
Superior Vena Cava
Brings blood from Jugular Vein (head and arms) to the heart
Inferior Vena Cava
Brings deoxygenated blood from the lower part of body to the heart
Aorta
Brings oxygenated blood from heart all the way down to the Iliac artery (lower body)
Mesenteric Arteries
Branches off aorta to go to the digestive tract
Hepatic Portal Vein
Brings blood from Digestive Tract to the Liver
Renal Artery
Brings oxygenated blood from aorta to the Kidneys
Renal Vein
Brings deoxygenated blood from the Kidneys to the Inferior Vena Cava
Illiac Artery
Brings oxygenated blood to the lower body
Iliac Vein
Brings deoxygenated blood from lower body to the inferior Vena Cava
Gastric Bypass (3 Steps)
1) Small stomach pouch created
2) Small intestine cut pass duodenum and small pouch attached to middle part of small intestine
3) End of duodenum attached in same spot in middle part of small intestine
Gastric Bypass (New Functioning)
Food enters small stomach pouch and heads down into small intestine.
Pancreatic Juices, Bile from Liver, and Stomach Enzymes still meet food, but at middle section of small intestine.
The pancreas has an endocrine gland that secretes ____ into the _____ and perform the following function:
secretes “insulin” into the “bloodstream” and will regulate blood glucose levels by decreasing.
The pancreas also secretes ____ into the ____.
secretes “digestive enzymes” into the “small intestine”
Type 1 diabetes problem: what is not working, what is still working?
patient pancreas not secreting enough insulin, however, digestive enzymes are still functioning.
Pancreas Transplant Steps
1) Donor pancreas is cut off INCLUDING duodenum
2) Donated pancreas and duodenum are attached to recipient small intestine
3) Recipient’s Illiac Artery and Vein attached to new donor pancreas.
Hepatic Portal Vein Transports what kind of blood?
Oxygen Poor
Hepatic Portal Vein Transports nutrient poor or rich blood?
Nutrient Rich
Why might you need a hepatic portal vein bypass surgery?
You may have cirrhosis of the liver, caused by Hep C and or alcohol abuse
