Software designed to infiltrate a computer system and possibly damage it without the user’s knowledge or consent
Viruses
Malicious Code that runs on a machine without the user’s knowledge and infects the computer when executed
Virus Type - Boot Sector
Viruses that are stored in the first sector of a hard drive and are loaded into memory upon boot up
Virus Type - Macro
Virus is embedded into a document and is executed when the document is open by the user
Virus Type - Program
Virus infected executable and application
Virus Type - Multipartite
Virus that combines boot and program viruses to first attach itself to the boot sector and system files before attacking other files of the computer
Virus Type - Encrypted
Virus using encryption to hide itself from virus scanners
Virus Type - Polymorphic
Advanced version of an encrypted virus that changes itself every time it is executed by altering the decryption module to avoid detection
Virus Type - Metamorphic
Virus that is able to rewrite itself entirely before in attempts to infect a file (advanced from of polymorphic)
Virus Type - Stealth
Virus that uses multiple techniques to avoid detection by anti-virus software
Virus Type - Armored
Viruses have a layer of protection to confuse a program or person analyzing it
Virus Type - Hoax
Comes in the form of a pop-up, website or phone call that is trying to trick the user into infecting their machine
