malware
This word comes from the term “malicious software”. It is the collective term given to software that is harmful to a computer system or computer network.
worms
A worm is a computer virus that infects your computer. When this virus is in the pc it copies itself and repeats this until the computers memory is full. Although worms do not directly damage the computer software they do slow down your machine until it can’t be used any more.
browser exploit
This is a program that looks harmless and tricks you into running it on your computer. It then carries out its real task, for example, displaying adverts on your desktop or installing unwanted toolbars.
trojans
A malicious code that takes advantage of an internet vulnerability to make the browser do something you don’t want to. [freeze, crash, change settings etc…]
RAT
A remote access trojan which gives control of your computer to a hacker.
rootkits
The software that enables a hacker to get control of your computer.
diallers
A mallicious program that takes control of your computer and uses it to call expensive phone numbers.
scareware
Scareware is a false security system that tries to scare the user into buying it by warning of some threat to the system.
keylogger
A keylogger is a program designed to track your keystrokes, often used to steal passwords, credit card details etc…
spyware
Spyware programs gather information about you from your computer. This can be personnal information or information about what websites you have visited. Some spyware can also change your computer settings.
adware
A program that when downloaded spams your browser with adverts.
Phishing
This will appear as an advert and tricks you into entering your information.
Identity theft
This is when someone gets your details and pretends to be you.
Operating system exploit
Malicious code that takes advantage of a weakness in the operating system.
P2P infection
This is when you get a virus through a file sharing website.
