The first virus ever created displayed a short poem when the infected computer booted for the 50th time.
What does Ransomware do?
Ransomware demands information or money, with a threat of harmful action, or of not revoking a harmful action.
What does Spyware do?
Spyware records user activities, such as passwords, keypresses, username, clicks, website visits, and other user information.
What do Botnets do?
Botnets allow hackers to control groups of computers to send spam emails, overload servers (called denial-of-service), and launch new attacks.
What do Computer Worms do?
Worms are applications in themselves. They are designed to make copies of themselves and spread through local networks. See document card on “Worm attacks”.
What do Viruses do?
Viruses are pieces of software which attach themselves to programs and insert themselves into secure locations. They are said to self-replicating.
What do Trojan Horses do?
Trojans are often used to install other types of malware, by disguising themselves as normal files. They spread using actions by the user.
What does a Rootkit do?
Rootkits are used to remotely access other computers.
What do Bots do?
Bots perform an action or series of actions on a computer. They can be discreet or obvious.
What does Adware do?
Adware is used to display adverts. It is usually harmless (sometimes increases CPU usage), but some act as Trojan Horses to install other more harmful malware.
How can malware get into your device?
It usually exploits human or technical factors including: malicious download links, through compromised software, through a remote network, or through a drive-by download.
