Malformations Flashcards
Hemartoma?
Childhood neoplasm where a tumor-like lesion usually appears in the deep dermal tissue of the upper torso.
Abnormal overgrowth of tissue native to organ in which it occurs, in a disorganized manner.
Defining features of a hemartomas
Mature fibrous tissue
Primitive cells
Fat cells
Tumors with tissue or organ components resembling normal derivatives of more than one germ layer
Teratomas
Are teratomas benign or malignant?
They can be both
Reversible replacement of one differentiated cell type with another mature differentiated cell type due to cell sensitivity
Metaplasia which a common example is squamous metaplasia in smokers
Abnormality of development or an epithelial/mesenchymal anomaly of growth and differentiation
Dysplasia
What are the two possibilities of dysplasia?
Epithelial (in the cervix or larynx) or mesenchymal (breast)
Characteristics of Dysplasia
- inc. nucleus abnormalities
- no normal differentiations
- pre-malignant lesion
Anaplasias/ ‘Backward Formations’
Is a condition of cells in which they have poor cellular differentiation
Morphological features of Anaplasia
Pleomorphism, Nuclear abnormalities, Prominent nucleoli and Atypical mitosis
