Male System Flashcards
Sperm
- “Spermatozoa”
- Male sex cells
Testicles
- Produce sperm and testosterone
- Every male has two
Testosterone
-Causes the appearance and behavior of the animal to have masculine traits
Epididymis
- Attached to each testicle
- sperm enter from the testicles and are stored here while they mature
Scrotum
- Two-lobed sac that contains and protects the two testicles
- regulates the temperature of testicles
Vas deferens
-Serves as a transportation tube that carries the sperm-containing fluid from each epididymis to the urethra
Urethra
-Large, muscular canal extending from the urinary bladder to the end of the penis
Accessory Glands
-Glands that add volume and nutrients to the sperm-rich fluid coming from the epididymis
- Seminal vesicles
- Prostate gland
- Cowper’s gland
Seminal Vesicles
-open into the urethra to produce a fluid that protects and transports sperm
Prostate Gland
- near the urethra and bladder
- produces a fluid that mixes with the seminal fluid throughout animal reproduction
Semen
-Mixture of seminal and prostate fluids and sperm
Cowper’s Gland
- produces a fluid that moves down the urethra ahead of the seminal fluid
- This fluid cleans and neutralizes the urethra, helping to protect the sperm as it moves through
Penis
-Deposits semen in the female reproductive system
Copulation
-Mating
Sigmoid Flexure
- Muscle commonly found in bulls, rams, and boars
- Along with the retractor muscle, helps extend penis from sheath
