Male Reproductive System Flashcards
Arterial supply of the testes
Testicular artery (from the abdominal aorta), partially: artery to ductus deferens (from the internal iliac artery) and cremasteric artery (from the inferior epigastric artery)
Venous drainage of the testes
Pampiniform plexus to the testicular veins
- Right testicular v. to the IVC
- Left testicular v. to the left renal v.
Lymphatic drainage of the testes
Lumbar nodes
Arterial supply of the epididymis
Testicular artery (from the abdominal aorta)
Venous drainage of the epididymis
Pampiniform plexus to the testicular veins
- Right testicular v. to the IVC
- Left testicular v. to the left renal v.
Lymphatic drainage of the epididymis
Lumbar nodes
Innervation of the epididymis
- Sympathetic system: the testicular plexus (along the testicular artery)
- Parasympathetic system: the vagus nerve
- Visceral sensory: spinal nerves from the segments T11–T12
Coverings of the spermatic cord

External spermatic fascia
It is derived from the aponeurosis (not sure) of the external abdominal oblique muscle
Cremasteric fascia and muscle
Internal abdominal oblique muscle (inserts into the tunica vaginalis)
Transversus abdominis muscle does not contribute a layer
Internal spermatic fascia
Transversalis fascia
Vascular supply of the seminal vesicles
- Arterial supply: artery to ductus deferens, inferior vesical artery, middle rectal artery
- Venous drainage: prostatic venous plexus, vesical venous plexus
- Lymphatic drainage: internal and external iliac lymph nodes
Innervation of the seminal vesicles
- Sympathetic system: prostatic plexus derived from the inferior hypogastric plexus
- Parasympathetic system: prostatic plexus derived from the inferior hypogastric plexus
- Viscerosensory fibres: are located in the prostatic plexus
Vascular supply of the prostate
- Arterial supply: the prostatic branches of the inferior vesical artery and middle rectal artery
- Venous drainage: the prostatic venous plexus and vesical venous plexus
- Lymphatic drainage: the internal and external iliac nodes and the sacral nodes
Innervation of the prostate
- Sympathetic system: the prostatic plexus originating from the inferior hypogastric plexus
- Parasympathetic plexus: the prostatic plexus originating from the inferior hypogastric plexus
- Viscerosensory system: nerve fibers in the parasympathetic and sympathetic prostatic plexus
Layers of the scrotum

Vascular supply of the scrotum
- Arterial supply:
- Anterior half of the scrotum: the anterior scrotal branches from the external pudendal arteries
- Posterior half of the scrotum: the posterior scrotal branches from the internal pudendal artery
- Scrotal layers: the cremasteric artery from the inferior epigastric artery
- Venous drainage:
- The anterior scrotal veins, which drain into the great saphenous vein
- The posterior scrotal veins, which drain into the internal pudendal vein
- Lymphatic drainage: the superficial inguinal nodes
Innervation of the scrotum
- Motor system: the genital branch of the genitofemoral nerve
- Somatosensory system:
- Anterior 1/3 of the scrotum: the ilioinguinal nerve, genital branch of the genitofemoral nerve
- Posterior 2/3 of the scrotum: the pudendal nerve, posterior cutaneous nerve of the thigh
Vascular supply of the penis
- Arterial supply: the internal pudendal artery
- Dorsal artery of penis – supplies the skin and glans of the penis and the foreskin
- Deep artery of penis – inside the corpus cavernosum, gives off the helicine arteries as its branches
- Artery of bulb of penis – inside the bulb of the penis
- Urethral artery – inside the corpus spongiosum
- Venous drainage:
- Superficial dorsal vein of penis – an unpaired vein that drains through the external pudendal veins into the common femoral vein
- Deep dorsal vein of penis – an unpaired vein that bifuractes into the pudendal plexus of Santorini (and further to the prostatic venous plexus), and into the internal pudendal vein which converges into the internal iliac vein
- Lymphatic drainage: the superficial inguinal nodes;
- Glans of penis: the deep inguinal nodes, external iliac nodes;
- Corpora cavernosa, corpus spongiosum, urethra: the internal iliac nodes
Innervation of the penis
- Somatosensory system: the ilioinguinal nerve (the skin of the root of the penis), dorsal nerve of the penis from the pudendal nerve
- Sympathetic system: the cavernous nerves of the penis from the inferior hypogastric plexus
- Parasympathetic system: the cavernous nerves of the penis from the sacral splanchnic nerves via the inferior hypogastric plexus
