Male reproductive system Flashcards
1
Q
What are the two main functions of the male reproductive system
A
- Provision of androgens – to sustain male phenotype
- Production of sperm
2
Q
What structures are contained within the testis and what are their function?
A
- Leydig cells (respond to LH) – produce testosterone – gives negative feedback to GnRH – need in high concentrations for spermatogenesis and is also needed for male phenotype
- Sertoli (respond to FSH)- important for spermatogenesis (provide structural and metabolic support for the production of sperm) – produces inhibin (negative feedback GnRH)
3
Q
Where is sperm stored before ejaculation?
A
Within the epididymis
4
Q
Describe the path of sperm on its way out
A
- Produced in the seminiferous tubules
- Gains motility and stored within the epididymis
- Passes through the vas deferens (mixed with fluid from the seminal vesicle)
- Enters the ejaculatory duct
- Enters the urthra, mixed with fluid from the prostate
5
