Male Reproductive System Flashcards
Organs of male reproductive system
Tested
System of ducts (epididymis, ductus deferents, ejaculatory ducts, and urethra)
Accessory sex glands (seminal vesicles, prostate, and bulbourethral glands)
Supporting structures (scrotum and penis)
Scrotum
Supporting structure for the testes
Consist of loose skin and underlying subcutaneous layer that hangs from the root of the penis
Raphe
Median ridge that depresses scrotum skin into lateral portions
Externally
Scrotal septum
Divides scrotum into two sacs, each containing a single testis
Dartos muscle
The subcutaneous layer and muscle tissue the septum is made up of
Cremaster muscle
Series of small bands of skeletal muscle that descend as an extension of the internal oblique muscle that descend as an extension of the internal oblique muscle through the spermatic cord to surround the testes
Testes
Paired oval glands in the scrotum measuring about 5cm long and 2.5 cm in diameter
Tunica vaginalis
Serous membrane which is derived from the peritoneum and forms during the descent of the testes, partially covers the testes
Hydrocele
Collection of serous fluid in the tunica vaginalis
Tunica albuginea
Internal to the tunica vaginalis the testis is surrounded by is a white fibrous capsule composed of dense irregular connective tissue
It extends inward, forming the septa that divides the testis into a series of internal compartments
Lobules
Series of internal compartments
Seminiferous tubules
Each of the 200-300 lobules contains one to three tightly coiled tubules
Where sperm are produced
Spermatogenesis
Process by which the seminiferous tubules of the testes produce sperm
Spermatogenic cells
Sperm forming cells
Sustentacular cells
Also known as Sertoli cells
Have several functions in supporting spermatogenesis
