Male Reproductive System Flashcards
Tunica Albugina
white connective tissue on testes
Testes
3-5 degrees lower than normal for good sperm production, (Gonads) about the size of a small egg.
seminiferous tubules
compartments filled with tubes; the tubes PRODUCE sperm; make testosterone?
Epididymis
sits on top of testes, another extension for the tubes, Function: immature eggs get sent there
scrotum
external sac of skin, subcutaneous tissue, holds testes, wall separates the left and right scrotum
Cremaster muscle
circles the scrotum and the testes; also brings closer and farther away when needed. Smooth muscle
Vas Deferens
run from epididymis up to inguinal canal then up and back through to side of urinary bladder. Function: storage until next ejaculation or if not, absorb back into the body
Ejaculatory duct
transports sperm out, carries sperm from epididymis to outside world, where vas deferens and seminal vesicles join
Penis
made of erectile skin, allows for sexual intercourse. There is a prepus on the penis, fits on distal end of penis. Removal of the prepus is called circumcisim.
Prostate gland
size of a nut, urethra goes through middle of prostate, small. Function: secreting white alkaline liquid substance. (adds alkalinity to sperm and semen)
Cowpers Glands (bulborethra glands)
finish off amount of semen, secrets alkaline liquid, very mucoid, on one ejaculation, 2-6 mL of semen is let out
100 million sperm per mL of semen
urethra
a tube shape; sphincter where it starts will shut off and not allow urine out of bladder when sexually excited.
Testosterone
made in testes, hormone secreted at puberty, Function: sperm development, voice change because of vocal folds get thicker, etc.
Pituitary gland
produces hormones
Follicle stimulation hormone
target organ is seminiferous tubules
Interstitial Cell stimulation hormone (icsh)
cells of connective tissue that holds cells together, layer of tissue that lies between seminiferous tubules( make testosterone) then testosterone gets into blood stream
cryptoorchidism
Hidden testes; surgical intervention to drop testes; Hole in abdominal wall for spermatic cord to go through
cremaster reflex test
stroke inner thigh, will cause test to move closer to body, if that doesn’t happen, the nervous system isn’t working on that side.
Tunica Vaginalis
double pouch/fold of serous membrane/lining that lines testes and inside of the scrotum. SAME AS PERITONEUM. why? cause it started in the inside when baby was a fetus.
spermatic cord
testicular artery/vein/nerve and lymph vessle, cassed in connective tissue then the cremaster muscle then the skin
Seminal Vesicle
responsible for some semen, vas deferens hook onto, makes 60% of semen
Semen (in it)
high in vitamin C, sugar and fatty acid (prosta glandins)
