Male reproductive system Flashcards
area between the thighs, bounded by the symphysis pubis, coccyx posteriorly, and the ischial tuberosities laterally.
PERINEUM
transfer sperm from male to female, excrete urine
Glans Penis (Penis)
What is the function of male reproductive system?
Produce sperm cells (sex cells)
Produce male sex hormones
Transfer sperm cells to female
Extends from urinary bladder to end of penis, passageway for urine and male reproductive fluids.
URETHRA
Thread-like tubules on side of each testis where seminiferous tubules empty new sperm, and where the sperm continue to mature and develop the ability to swim and bind to oocytes.
Epididymis
Primary male reproductive organ, produces sperm, contain seminiferous tubules where sperm is produced. Contain interstitial cells that secretes testosterone, contain germs cell where sperm cells were derived, and sustain sustentacular cells that nourish germ cells and produce hormones.
TESTES
Contains testes, dartos muscle that moves scrotum and testes close to and away from body depending on temperature.
SCROTUM
Extends from epididymis and joins seminal vesicle, cut during a vasectomy.
DUCTUS DEFERENS (VAS DEFERENS)
Provide fructose, contain prostaglandins which decrease mucus thickness around cervix and uterine tubes and help sperm move through female reproductive tract, contains coagulants that help deliver semen into female tract.
SEMINAL VESICLES
Production of sperm cells
Germs cells Spermatogonia Primary spermatocytes Secondary spermatocytes Spermatids Sperm cells
Male sex hormones
GNRH (Gonadotrophin-Releasing Hormone
LH (Luteinizing Hormone)
FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone)
Testosterone
Gonadotrophin source
Hypothalamus
LH and FSH Source
Anterior Pituitary Gland
Testosterone source and function
Interstitial cells in testes,
involved in development and maintenance of reproductive organs
GNRH function
stimulates secretion of LH AND FSH
