  • Treat certain breast cancers

Therapeutic Action

A
  • Form of testosterone responsible for growth and development of male sex organs and secondary sex characteristics
  • Act to increase retention of nitrogen, sodium, pottasium and phophorus
  • Decrease in urinary excretion of calcium- androgen is thus used to treat osteoporosis in combination with estrogen

Nursing Implementation

A
  • Remove old dermal system before applying new system to clean dry intact skin - ensure accurate administration and decrease risk of toxic level
  • monitor liver function periodicaly with long term therapy
  • discontinue use if signs of hepatic dysfunction (elevated liver enzymes, trouble with bloodclotting, heavy periods, bleeding from gum)
  • Provide thorough pt teaching

  • metabolized in liver; excreted in urine
  • Route- IM
  • Onset- Slow
  • Peak - 1 to 3 days
  • Can also be given dermally

Contraindications & Cautions

A
  • Contraindicated in pregnancy and lactation (adverse effects on fetus and neonate)
  • Allergy to drug or ingredient of drug
  • Presence of prostate or breast cancer in men
  • Caution- liver dysfunction or cardiovascular disease, can be exacerbated by effects of the hormone

If androgens are to be used another method should be used while feeding

Adverse Effect

A
  • headache
  • dizziness
  • acne
  • edema
  • nausea
  • hepatocellular carcinoma
  • hirsutism
  • hypoestrogenic effects (flushing, sweating, vaginitis)
    *androgenic effects such as acne, deepening voice, oily skin

hirsutism is increased hair distribution
