what is torsion?
twisting of spermatic cord supplying blood to the testes and epididymis
what is a spermatocele?
firm, sperm-containing, painless cyst of the epididymis that is visible w/ transillumination
phimosis
difficult prepuce retraction due to inflammation
orchitis
acute inflammation of the testis-painful, tender, swollen
hydrocele
non-tender, fluid filled mass resulting from interference w/ lymphatic drainage
epididymitis
acute, painful inflammatory process of epididymis; cause under 40 is typically STI
paraphimosis
inability to replace foreskin back to forward position
variocele
dilation of veins that drain testes; worm-like on palpation (usually on left)
torsion treatment
MEDICAL EMERGENCY to replace blood flow w/n 4-6 hours
spermatocele treatment
surgical removal of cyst
orchitis treatement
antibiotics, pain meds, rest w/ scrotum on ice pack
hydrocele treatment
no treatment unless swelling becomes large and uncomfortable; then aspiration/drainage
epididymitis treatment
antibiotics
paraphimosis treatment
antibiotics, warm soaks, possible circumcision
variocele treatment
surgery is indicated if patient is infertile, sperm damaged by varioceles; may be treated with sclerosing agent or by surgical ligation of spermatic vein
