Inspect the anal area for cracks, fissures, fistulas, or bleeding hemorrhoids that make exam unsafe.

Explain DRE

A

Lubricate finger
Have pt. bear down and insert up to knuckle, pt. squeezes to check neurological and muscular control of anal sphincter
Bear down, insert fully, palate prostate. Tell pt. discharge is normal.
Turn finger to check rectal walls 360 degrees.
Bear down again and remove finger - feels like having a bowel movement.

What do you do when finishing DRE?

A

Smear finger on GUIAC test kit to assess for fetal occult blood.

What does GUIAC test for?

A

colo-rectal cancer - annual screen for 50+

What is recommended every 5 years for 50+?

A

Colonoscopy and sigmoidoscopy
