Balantitis
inflammation of the glans, caused by infection, poor hygiene, uncircumsized. Tx-regular cleansing, antibiotics
Phimosis
inability to retract foreskin to expose glans
tx-surgery, only when urine flow blocked
Paraphimosis
entrapment of retracted foreskin behind the corona of glans, tissue death.
Tx- circumcision
Peyronie’s disease
unatural curvature of the erect penis caused by scar formation in the corpora cavernosa tx-surgery
hydrocele
collection of fluid around the testicle, typically painless, little boys, enlarged testicle tx- goes away on own or surgey
variocele
enlargement of veins that drain the testicle, young adults, venous valve blocked, can impair fertility, painful. tx-watch and wait
Epididimitis
inflammed epididimis, common, caused by trauma and infection(STI). treatment- antibiotics, pus may be drained
Prostatis
inflammed prostate-(acute/chronic)
s/s- belly pain, painful urination, blood in urine, common
prostatic hyperplasia
older men. Enlarged prostate causes urethra being tightened by sheath which prevents urine flow
tx- TURP
prostate cancer
-slow growth, enlarged prostate, urination difficulties
tx-watch/wait, TURP, surgery
screening- DRE and PSA
Congenetial adrenal hyperplasia
glands make too many horomones, excess testerone
- male-genetalia normal
- female-birth(ambigious genetalia), fused labia, enlarged clit, bc of testerone
Androgen Insensativity
developing embryo will lack cellular receptors to “see” androgens
- XX-no effect
- XY- born as a female
- lack reproductive tract, blind shallow ending vagina
5-alpha reductase defiency
cannot convert testerone to DHT, so male will have female characteristics but not fully developed male genetalia (micropenis, macro clit)
