Male and Female Pelvis Flashcards
Where do gonadal veins drain on the right vs left sides?
Right side: directly into the IVC
Left side: into the renal vein
2 main ligaments in the pelvis and their attachments
Sacrospinous (sacrum to ischial spine)
Sacrotuberous (sacrum to ischial tuberosity)
Piriformis muscle
From the sacrum through the greater sciatic foramen and to the femur
Obturator internus
Closes off the obturator foramen
Coccygeus muscle
From the sacrum to the ischial spine
Lies right on top of the sacrospinous ligament
Levator ani
Bowl shaped muscle that forms the pelvic floor
Attaches to the tendinous arch of the obturator internus
What structure divides the greater and lesser sciatic foramen
The sacrospinous ligament
Obturator canal
Runs vertically between the pubis and the obturator internus and out the obturator foramen
3 main nerves in the pelvis
Obturator nerve
Sacral Plexus
Pudendal nerve
2 parts of the venous drainage from the rectum
Veins to the caval system (lower 1/3)
Veins to the portal system (upper 2/3)
If you have rectal cancer, where can it metastasize to?
Liver (portal drainage)
Lungs (caval drainage)
Hemorrhoids vs rectal varicies
Hemorrhoids: many different etiologies (increases intra-abdominal pressure, low fiber diet, constipation, etc). From portal or caval plexus
Rectal varices: enlargement of the veins because of portal HTN (only portal system)
Where does the ejaculatory duct join the urethra?
In the prostate
Relationship between the vas deferens and the ureter?
Vas deferens crosses over the ureter
Water under the bridge
Path of sperm
Testes, epididymis, vas deferens, ampulla of vas deferens, seminal vesicle joins (now called the ejaculatory duct), and that joins with the urethra in the prostate
