Male anatomy Flashcards

1
Q

Penis

A
  • structure: shaft is external portion of penis, contains 3 erectile structure -> two corpora cavernosa and one corpus spongiosum, root is internal portion of the penis; lies in the body, approx. 2 inches long, connects the underlying structures of the shaft to the pelvic cavity
  • location: external male genitalia
  • function: involved in sexual arousal, excretion of urine and transfer of sperm

Glans (head)

A
  • structure: smooth, acorn shaped, well-endowed with nerve endings
  • location: at the tip of penis

Foreskin

A
  • structure: loose tubular fold of skin
  • location: partially or completely covers the glans
  • function: unclear, may protect the glans

Q

Cavernous bodies ( Corpora Cavernosa)

A
  • structure: two erectile structures located within the shaft of the penis
  • location: twin structures that lie side by side along the upper side of the penis
  • function: fill with blood during arousal, account for most of the penile erectile arousal

Q

Spongy body (corpus spongiosum)

A
  • structure: erectile structure located within the shaft of the penis
  • location: near the midline of the penis, on its lower surface, extends from the shaft. into the glans
  • function: spongiosum raises visible ridge on the underside of the penis during sexual arousal

Q

Urethra & urethral opening

A
  • structure: narrow tube
  • location: urethra located in the shaft, urethral opening located on the glands near the frenulum
  • function: transport of urine and semen

Q

Corona & Frenulum

A
  • structure: corona -> rim of glans , frenulum -> strip of loose skin on the underside on the penis
  • location: corona -> located around the glans, frenulum -> runs between the glans and the shaft
  • function: corona and frenulum are usually the most erotically sensitive regions

Q

PC muscle

A
  • structure: underlies/ supports pelvic organs
  • location: underlies/ supports pelvic organs
  • function: contraction during sex stiffens vaginal walls, contractions stronger at orgasm; prevents urinary/ fecal leakage, PC muscle control can allow men the ability to delay ejaculation

Scrotum

A
  • structure: sack like
  • location: located behind the penis
  • function: have two main functions; produce sperm, secrete sex hormones

Q

Sperm

A
  • structure: head: contains genetic information. tail: motility
  • location: produced in seminiferous tubules
  • function: fertilization of ovum, each man produces about 100 million sperm per day

A
  • structure: tube
  • location: in between the epididymis and the ejaculatory duct
  • function: transport and storage of mature sperm form the epididymis to the ejaculatory duct

Q

Prostate gland

A
  • structure: single gland slightly larger than a walnut
  • location: located at the base of the bladder that surrounds the urethra
  • function: prostate secretions ( a cloudy, alkaline fluid) are a major component of semen
17
Q

Seminal vesicles

A
  • structure: two glands
  • location: situated to either side of the prostate
  • function: NOT storage areas for sperm, ass their own secretions to sperm
18
Q

Bulbourethral glands & pre-cum (Cowper’s Glands)

A
  • structure: two pea sized glands
  • location: near the root of the penis (below the prostate gland)
  • function: their secretions (often called pre-cum) are excreted prior to ejaculation
